The ultimate Mackay holiday bucket list
Mackay is a town filled to the brim with an amazing selection of things to do. And endless sights and wildlife to see! Perfectly positioned on the doorstep of some of Mackay’s best attractions, The Shores Holiday Apartments is close to all the action. Especially our local wildlife. The ultimate Mackay holiday bucket list is the first step in exploring the Mackay Region.
Flatback turtles lay their eggs on Blacks Beach between October and January. As a result the hatchlings emerge between December and the end of March. Often guests can spot goannas lazing about enjoying the sunshine or digging in the garden. With our new bee apartments, guests can also observe native stingless bees going about their daily tasks.
Mackay promises to be a delight for the whole family, or a couple’s romantic getaway. To help you get started, we have put together some of the best attractions and sights. A must on your Mackay bucket list.
Soak in the seclusion at Blacks Beach
It’s time to hit the beach! Just a hop, skip and jump away from The Shores Holiday Apartments, Blacks Beach is the perfect place to relax and breathe in the salty air. If hanging back and relaxing in the Queensland sun isn’t your thing, try your hand at beach cricket, jogging, volleyball, bocce, fishing and more. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for whales and turtles!
Venture to Eungella to see the platypus
There is some amazing wildlife to see in Mackay, but one of the most unique of them all is the platypus. Eungella National Park is one of the best places to spot a platypus. It’s located approximately 80km west of Mackay (the drive is well worth it – the scenery along the way is spectacular!). Platypus are nocturnal animals, so your best chance of sighting one is at dawn and dusk. So plan your visit with this in mind.
Meet the beach wallabies at Cape Hillsborough
One of the most iconic things to do in Mackay is to watch the kangaroos and wallabies at Cape Hillsborough as the sun rises on the beach – it is postcard perfect. If you love wildlife, this is the perfect opportunity to observe these unique animals in their natural habitat. Cape Hillsborough is located about 45 minutes north of Mackay. In addition to wallabies and kangaroos it boasts many beautiful walking trails with incredible views of the ocean and rainforest.
Take the family for a swim at the Bluewater Lagoon
If you’re visiting Mackay in summer, the Bluewater Lagoon is the perfect place to cool off. Its prime location (in the heart of Mackay) makes it a great spot to hang out, eat and soak up the tropical sun rays. In addition the lagoon includes a 19.5 metre water slide, children’s playground, BBQ facilities and more. Entry to the lagoon is free of charge.
Visit Sarina Sugar Shed and taste the locally made rum
Have you ever wanted to tour a sugar mill? Now is your chance! Visitors of the Sarina Sugar Shed have the unique opportunity to enjoy a personalised guided tour of the miniature sugar mill and distillery. During the tour you will also have the chance to taste sugar in many different forms, as well as a variety of products made from the local sugar cane.
